Korean is one of the Koreanic languages commonly spoken in the Korean peninsula and its neighbour, the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture of China. Today, it is known that there are more than 77 million people worldwide who speak Korean as a native language. It is the official language of both North Korea and South Korea. The written languages of Korean are the alphabetic syllabary, Hangul, and the Chinese logograms called Hanja. Korean is included in the Koreanic languages along with Jeju language spoken in Jeju Province.<\/p>

There is no acknowledged theory which considers Koreanic languages under a language family, which are classified as isolated languages like Japanese. Although it was classified under the Ural-Altaic language family, and then under the Altaic languages in history, these arguments lost their academic validity after the 20th century. It is also claimed that Korean can be related to Japanese languages regarding its vocabulary and grammatical features.<\/p>

Koreans today use the Korean alphabet, Hangul. This alphabet is characterized by the shape of the mouth and tongue. In South Korea, Chinese characters are still taught to children.<\/p>
