Portuguese is a language spoken by more than two hundred million people as mother tongue. It is also the sixth most spoken language around the world. Nearly half of the population in South and Latin America speaks Portuguese. This language belongs to the Romance languages branch under the Italo-Celtic subgroup of the Indo-European language family, and is very similar with Spanish but it sounds much more melodic and soft. Even though the most of the words are common between these two languages, the nasal vowels mainly used in Portuguese do not exist in Spanish. The other languages related to Portuguese are Italian, French and Romanian. The colonial policy of Portugal in the 15th and 16th centuries led Portuguese spread globally faster. Whilst different dialects are spoken in Brazil and Portugal in terms of articulation, people in these two counties have no difficulty to communicate. Though few in number, some words are pronounced differently in both countries. For example pineapple is \u201canan\u00e1s\u201d in Portugal while it is \u201cabacaxi\u201d in Brazil.<\/p>

The indicators \u201c\u00e0, \u00e1, \u00e2, \u00e3, \u00e9, \u00ea, \u00ed, \u00f3, \u00f4, \u00fa\u201d are used with vowels in Portuguese as well as the digraphs \u201cch, lh, nh, rr, ss, qu, gu\u201d.<\/p>
