Earn While You Buy!

[You Can Earn Your Time]

In 2018, in our twenty-first year, we shared our twenty-one recommendations one by one on social media, and we have compiled and summarized them into a kind of translated purchasing guide. We will be happy to answer your questions in this very complex area of the procurement process.

  • When you purchase translation services, you should always ask what processes your supplier will use. You can ask for definitions of the processes, success criteria and evidence of their implementation.
  • You can find out whether your supplier has the competence, proficiency, experience, appropriate resources and tools for all processes. If you can ensure that your supplier informs you about the Pre-Translation preparation processes and checks the source text for translation suitability, the quality of the target text will increase. You should also ask your supplier to describe the Translation and Post-Translation processes in detail.
  • You should inquire at the quotation or confirmation stage whether your translation provider offers an absolute customer satisfaction guarantee. You should also make sure that your translation provider can provide post-collection services.
  • Do you know who your translation supplier really is? Your supplier should be able to share their qualifications and experience with their customers, have a confidentiality and service agreement with all of them, constantly feed back them, provide training if necessary and measure their performance.
  • Rather than translation companies that quote you in units such as characters, lines, pages, etc., you should prefer translation companies that quote/quote based on WORD and share/share text analysis information with you. If you have received bids from several places and are having a hard time understanding the differences between them, you can develop your own price and process definition model.
  • You should have at least a basic knowledge of translation technologies. C computer-assisted D translation software improves quality and reduces costs. If your supplier does not use such software, you may be paying for similar and repetitive texts over and over again. LCA is now a must-have. You should always check whether your translation provider uses a CAT.
  • If your translation provider uses CAT or MT (Machine Translation), you should make sure you know the difference between the two. With MT translations, there is a probability of getting usable target texts if the pre-preparation processes are done very well and the post-editing is done correctly. You should question the Preparation and Post Editing processes.
  • Do you have a contract with your supplier regarding the protection, storage, destruction, sharing with third parties, etc. of confidential information? We recommend that you add a clear statement on whether or not Machine Translation will be made to these articles.
  • If quality is important to you, you should not insist on extremely short delivery times. When calculating lead times, keep in mind that the average daily production rate for a translator's native language translations is around three thousand words, while an editor can edit around five thousand words per day. Fast translations with large teams require high-tech quality control practices and a well-managed project process.
  • For the sake of corporate identity and consistency, we recommend that you create a Term List to be used in the translation of documents representing your organization and share this list of terms with your supplier.
  • One of the most effective ways to check the translation of vital texts is "reverse translation". You should make sure that a different translation team performs this service without using existing Translation Memories and Term Lists.
