Classified under the Romance languages branch of the Indo-European language family, Italian is a language spoken by approximately 61 million people, most of who live in Italy and southern Switzerland. It is also frequently spoken by Italian immigrants in the USA, Argentina, Brazil, Canada and Australia. The use of Tuscan dialect instead of Latin by famous literary figures such as Boccaccio, Dante Alighieri and Petrarch had a great influence on the development of Italian. There are differences in Italian based on regions. One of the reasons is that a political unity was not defined in the region for a long time. Each region has its own dialect, making it hard for people from these different regions to understand each other.
Italian is the most faithful language to Latin among other Romance languages, and therefore named as “Modern Latin”. A person who speaks Italian well do not have difficulty in learning other related Romance languages such as French, Spanish, Portuguese, Romanian, and Catalan.
Italian is regarded as one of the most beautiful and the only melodic languages of the world. Vowel-ending structure of nearly all words and presence of strong accents give the language a unique melody. It also had influence on many other languages because the lingua franca of the time during the Renaissance was Italian. The terminology, especially in the field of music, is Italian.
