What is a Transcription Service?

As the information about the translation world increases, other operations that play a role in the translation process also come to the fore. Nowadays, a stage is often used before starting the translation process: transcription, that is, deciphering action.

Transcription is the act of transcribing any audio data. This audio data can be a voice recording of a conversation, or it can be in video format. We see many examples of this in everyday life: before subtitles are embedded in series and movies, the conversations are transcribed, that is, deciphered, and then this transcription goes through the translation process.

How to Transcribe

The transcription process is quite laborious. The deciphering process takes a long time, as writing speed remains slow compared to speaking. In addition, the recording must be listened to many times to transcribe accurately. This is important for a clear understanding of the content and not to omit any emphasis.

As can be understood, transcription is much more complex than deciphering pronounced words into writing. The stressed syllables, the speaker’s hesitations, and all the emotions reflected in the audio should also be conveyed on paper.

First, the audio or video is viewed, so the transcriber becomes familiar with the content. After the listening process, the transcriber writes the dialogue meticulously. In the meantime, he/she often stops the recording and ensures all conversations are written down to the last detail.

Sometimes the audio quality of the recordings in question may be low, and this will prolong the transcription process. Therefore, sound quality is an essential element affecting the act of transcription. However, audio quality can be improved through various computer programs, so the transcriber must be able to use these.

Two Different Transcription Methods

Two methods stand out in the transcription process: edited and one-to-one transcription. The preferred method depends on the needs of the customer.

Edited Transcription

The goal of the edited transcription is to preserve the meaning. Sentence structures are edited, unnecessary details are deleted, and meaning integrity is maintained. This method is suitable for more formal content. For example, a cough or speech errors should not be deciphered in audio recordings taken for academic studies.

It would be more appropriate for the client’s needs to continue with the edited transcription method for interviews, academic studies, conference records, and training videos.

One-to-One Transcription

The one-to-one transcription method is deciphering all kinds of audio elements in a recording. Exclamatory reactions, speech errors, movement sounds, and even coughing or sneezing sounds are noted. This method is frequently applied when deciphering scenarios.

Usage Areas of Transcription

It is seen that the transcription process is used in many areas. We even unconsciously see many examples of this in everyday life: movies and foreign TV series.

In addition, transcription service is of great importance for hearing-impaired individuals. All emphasis in speech needs to be transcribed so that context integrity can be maintained.
